What is Chiropractic? Chiropractic
is the study of the spine and the nervous system. It emphasizes the effect of
spinal manipulations to correct problems with the nervous system and the body.
How
can it benefit you? Decreasing pain Increasing range of motion Alleviating
muscle tenderness Increasing energy
But you won't know until you try
it.
Dr. Batdorf's philosophy is to improve her patients health using the
most powerful, least invasive tools - her hands. She also counsels patients on
nutrition and exercise to involve them with their healing so that they can maintain
their own good health.
Common Questions
How
much schooling do you need to be a Chiropractor? Chiropractors
must complete a four year program after three years of undergraduate requirements.
The whole chiropractic program requires 4,822 hours of coursework, which is similar
to the 4,667 hours required for medical school. Classroom instruction in Chiropractic
school includes 1,975 hours learning diagnostic and treatment methods, 1,416 hours
learning basic sciences, and 1,431 hours in clinical internship. The last 2 years
of chiropractic school are spent in clinical internship treating other students
and the general public. Finally, Chiropractors must pass a four part National
board in order to establish competency as a chiropractor.
Don’t
I need X-rays to be manipulated by a Chiropractor? X-rays
are useful for seeing problems with bones. X-rays do not show what is going on
with tendons, ligaments or muscles. Also, the FDA has for many years stated that
there is no amount of radiation that is good for you- that is why the person taking
the X-ray is behind a lead shield separating them from the patient getting the
X-ray. If there is a problem that suggests that a bone is broken, degenerative
bone disease, arthritis or cancer; an X-ray is necessary. However, I carefully
weigh the need for X-rays with the risks of radiation exposure and the cost of
X-rays. Often I will urge patients to receive a regimen of treatments to see if
manipulation will help prior to ordering X-rays. Often X-rays are not needed.
Why
do I need to come in so often in the beginning? There
are several factors that dictate how often you need to come in for appointments
in the beginning. First, think of the manipulation or adjustment as exercise.
Like exercise, the adjustment or manipulation is done to make a change in your
body. If you only exercise once a week it is going to take a lot longer to make
the changes you want. The same with chiropractic adjustments, if you only get
one a week, recovery is going to take longer. If you increase the frequency of
the visits then the time it takes to recover is less. Second, if a person has
been suffering from a condition for a long time, more than a year, it is unfair
to expect to have an immediate change in your body with just a few treatments.
Thus, the amount of time a person has been suffering with symptoms helps dictate
the length of treatment plan and the number of visits.
Why
do I need to keep coming in when I feel better? The
concept of wellness is to feel better than just “good” or to function at you optimum.
For example, do you take vitamins only when you are sick? Hopefully not. You should
take them everyday, whether you feel like you need them or not, and whether you
notice the difference of taking them or not. The same concept applies with “well-visits”
to the chiropractor. Think of it as a vitamin pill for your body. Preventing things
that can happen in the future and treating things that are just beginning to present
themselves in your body to prevent them from becoming bigger problems. | |
